Summary

The Jupiler Pro League (BEL1) (Belgian First Division A) is the top league in the Belgian football association. At the end of the 2020-2021 season, the BEL1 holds a Championship Playoff and a Europa League Playoff. Playoff results determine which teams qualify for the following non-league play:

The winner of the 2020-2021 Belgian Cup, typically a BEL1 team, also receives a berth in the Playoff Stage of the 2021-2022 UEFA Europa League.

Due to COVID-19, no BEL1 teams were relegated after the 2019-2020 season. For the 2020-2021 season, two BEL2 teams were promoted to BEL1.

Season Format

During the 2020-2021 regular season, each BEL1 team plays Home-Away matches against the other 17 BEL1 teams for 34 total matches per team. Immediately following the regular season, based on Final Table standings, clubs are assigned to the Championship Playoffs, the UEFA Europa League Playoffs, or relegation. Table ranking ties are broken by (1) matches won, (2) goal difference, (3) total goals scored, (4) away goals scored, (5) away matches won, then (6) a playoff.

Playoffs

Immediately following the 2020-2021 BEL1 regular season, the 1st through 4th place BEL1 teams are assigned to the Championship Playoffs, while the 5th through 8th place BEL1 teams are assigned to the Europa League Playoffs. In the Championship Playoffs, each plays Home-Away matches against the other 3 Championship Playoffs teams (6 total matches per team). In the Europa League Playoffs, each BEL1 teams plays Home-Away matches against the other 3 teams in their group (6 total matches per team). The winner plays a match against the 4th place team from the Championship Round. The winner receives the UEFA Europa Conference League - 2nd Qualifying Round berth.

Relegation

At the end of the 2020-2021 BEL1 season, the 18th place BEL1 team is relegated to the BEL2, and one BEL2 team is promoted to the 2021-2022 BEL1. The 17th place BEL1 team will enter into a Home/Away highest aggregate goals wins matches against the 2nd place BEL2 team.
